Participation Before Community

Brands cannot announce a community into existence. They must first create something worth doing together, then learn whether people choose to return.

“Community is repeated participation with memory.”

INFRASTRUCTURE CAN APPEAR OVERNIGHT. COMMUNITY CANNOT.

Community is one of the fastest words in marketing.

A brand launches a Discord server, opens a group, creates a membership page or gives its followers a collective name.

The infrastructure appears overnight.

The community does not.

A community exists when people repeatedly create value for one another. The brand may provide the conditions, but it cannot declare the relationship into being.

Before community, there must be participation.

GIVE PEOPLE SOMETHING TO DO

Give people something to do

Most communication asks people to receive.

Watch this. Read this. Remember this. Buy this.

Participation changes the direction of the exchange.

People are given a role. They can contribute, choose, build, perform, teach, collect, compete, host, interpret or help another person move through the experience.

The action does not need to be complicated. It needs to matter inside the world the brand is creating.

Commenting an emoji is technically an action. It rarely creates enough value to support a relationship.

The better test is whether the contribution changes the experience for the participant or for somebody else.

REPETITION CHANGES THE MEANING

Repetition changes the meaning

A single act is participation.

A pattern of meaningful acts can become a relationship.

People begin to recognise one another. Shared language forms. Certain behaviours become expected. Contributions accumulate. New participants learn by observing those already inside.

At that point, the brand is no longer organising isolated responses. It is maintaining conditions through which people can continue creating social value.

This is where community becomes possible.

Not guaranteed.

Possible.

WHY BRANDS MOVE TOO QUICKLY

Why brands move too quickly

Community sounds durable. Campaigns sound temporary. So teams rush to place the more valuable word on top of an immature system.

The community manager is hired before the participation mechanism is clear.

The platform is selected before anyone knows why people would return.

The content calendar is filled before the group has developed a reason to exist.

Soon, the operation depends on prompts from the brand. When the prompts stop, the community disappears.

That is not a failed community.

It is evidence that a community had not formed yet.

THE SEQUENCE

The sequence

A more honest sequence begins with a tension people already recognise.

The brand creates a useful role inside that tension.

People are equipped to act.

The action produces a visible consequence.

There is a reason to repeat it.

Repeated participation creates memory.

Memory makes relationships possible.

Only then should the brand decide whether the system requires an owned community, a recurring programme, a membership layer or simply a strong participation format.

Not every successful participation system needs to become a permanent community.

Some should end.

A finite experience can be strategically correct. The mistake is turning permanence into the objective before the behaviour earns it.

THE OPERATING QUESTION

The operating question

Do not begin with: How do we build a community?

Begin with: What can people do here that becomes more valuable when other people do it too?

If there is no credible answer, the community layer is premature.

Community is repeated participation with memory.

Build the behaviour first.

EVIDENCE BOUNDARY

WHAT THIS ARTICLE DOES NOT CLAIM.

This is a BRABA operating method. It should be tested against the category, audience behaviour and the obligations an owned community would create.
